Tax Tips for 2012

Here are the latest 2012 tax tips for forest landowners that the USDA Forest Service released. This may be of value to your forest landowners. While we are happy to share this with any forest landowners who implement forest management practices, keep in mind that landowners need to seek further tax guidance from their tax advisor.

Communities and Wildfire

Recent and prospective wildfire seasons in Colorado provide a sense of urgency to better communicate with residents, communities, and the general public about wildfire management. I'd like to invite you to a presentation/discussion on communities and wildfire led by Dr. Sarah McCaffrey. Sarah is a research social scientist with the US Forest Service Northern Research Station and is one of the foremost researchers on people and wildfire. She will be in Colorado in early March and on behalf of the Southern Rockies Fire Science Network, I am hosting a get-together at 4:30 PM, Thursday, March 7 in room 114 Forestry Building on the Colorado State University campus. Sarah will present on 10 years worth of research and there will be plenty of opportunity for Q&A and open discussion.

Another Reason
to Thin your forest

With this recent snow, I'm reminded that thinned tree stands let much more of their snowfall fall all the way to the ground where more of it will soak in when it melts. Much of the snow caught in tree branches just evaporates back into the air without ever touching the ground. Another reason to thin.
